What is Rehabilitation in the Home?
Rehabilitation in the Home (RITH) is a hospital substitution treatment (HST). It is a proven, clinically effective alternative to a prolonged hospital stay for people who have had a recent orthopaedic, cardiac, neurosurgery or other procedure. It allows eligible patients to receive hospital-standard treatment in the comfort and familiarity of their own home.
What services are provided by Vitalis Rehabilitation in the Home?
Vitalis RITH provides tailored, multidisciplinary services from physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses. Our in-person services are supported by telephone consultations from specialist rehabilitation nurses.
Where does Vitalis provide Rehabilitation in the Home services?
Vitalis RITH is available across the Greater Sydney region and Newcastle. We may also be able to support patients in other locations. Please contact the RITH team (call 0405 069 234 or email [email protected]) to discuss specific cases.
How long does the Vitalis RITH program take?
Each RITH program is targeted to the individual needs of the patient. The program generally lasts for five to six weeks, with rehab sessions lasting from 45 to 60 minutes. At the conclusion of the program, a detailed report of your progress and outcome measures is send to your surgeon and hospital.
What happens if I have a wound that needs managing?
Vitalis RITH can include a wound management service for patients who have staples or sutures that need trimming. All wound care is carried out in your home by experienced registered nurses.
How do I get Vitalis Rehabilitation in the Home care?
Your medical team will be able to advise if you can be treated treated at home after surgery. They can then refer you to Vitalis RITH. We will then be in touch to schedule your initial rehab visit.
You can also speak to your surgeon ahead of surgery to request Rehabilitation in the Home from Vitalis after your surgical procedure.

What accreditations does Vitalis RITH have?
Vitalis is one of only three hospital-at-home providers to be accredited to NSQHS standards. This means you can be assured of receiving hospital-standard care at home.
Vitalis RITH is also SIRA-accredited, meaning we can provide rehabilitation support in workers’ compensation, road and traffic accidents and home and building compensation cases.
How do I pay for Vitalis RITH?
Vitalis Rehabilitation in the Home is covered by many private health insurers, generally with no out-of-pocket expenses. Our HITH service can also be accessed on a user-pays basis. Please contact us for more information.
