For some people, a nursing home is the best answer, but for many others, well-structured care at home of the type provided by Vitalis Home Care is a better option.
How do I know what Home Care service I need?
If you or a loved one could benefit from care at home, the first step is to have an assessment of health and care needs, including cognitive. This will help identify what services and location are best suited to your needs. This is often companionship and help with things like shopping and meal preparation, light housekeeping and activities that engage interest and help re-establish social connections.
Vitalis can help with this assessment, as well as develop and deliver individualised care plans that meet your needs – now and into the future – as well as providing the most cost-effective solution.
Do I need a qualified nurses for my home care?
There are some things (like administering medication or providing wound care) that need the services of a Registered Nurse. However, in many cases you only need a properly trained and Registered Nurse-supervised Nursing Assistant or Companion. This Vitalis model of home care services keeps your costs at a lower level, but still retains the clinical care backup if needed.
Are your nurses and carers Vitalis employees?
Yes, every Vitalis team member is a direct employee, not a subcontractor. This ensures quality of care and means you will never be in the position of having to directly pay our nurses or caregivers.
Are your carers insured?
Yes, all Vitalis carers are covered under our comprehensive insurance policies. They also have up-to-date vaccinations, Police Checks and Working with Children Certificates.
What is the difference between live-in care and 24-hour care?
Live-in staff sleep in your home overnight and provide active care for an agreed period during waking hours. They will need a place to sleep and it is assumed they will have a relatively uninterrupted night’s sleep. If you are not able to accommodate a carer to sleep overnight or you need more care during the night, we can assign two or more staff to provide 24-hour care day.
Can my carer run errands for me?
Yes. Your carer can assist you with errands such as shopping or collecting your dry-cleaning.
Can my carer go with me to family events, take me on outings or go for walks with me?
Absolutely! Vitalis carers want to help you get the most out of life. They can go with you on outings of your choice (noting that you will need to cover any travel-related expenses and additional costs).
Can my carer go with me to appointments?
Yes. Vitalis carers can accompany you to medical and personal appointments if you would like them to. Please note that you will need to cover travel-related expenses and additional costs incurred by your carer on these trips.
What are my responsibilities towards Vitalis staff in my home?
Our staff must be safe when they provide your home care services. Before we start, we will conduct a Workplace Health and Safety assessment and repeat this periodically to ensure your care is appropriate to your needs and can be safely delivered by our team members.
What are carers not allowed to do?
Carers are not allowed to do anything that is clinical or invasive in nature, such as administering injections.

All Vitalis staff are trained in emergency procedures and your care plan will include a priority list of people to call should an emergency arise. This list should always be kept up to date with the Vitalis office team and placed in a highly visible location in your home.
Can my carer go in an ambulance with me?
Yes, they can go with you to help make sure you receive the highest level of attention. They can also speak to hospital staff on your behalf about what you need. Vitalis can also provide advocacy and healthcare navigation services for you.
