VAC Therapy troubleshooting for Vitalis HITH patients

How to troubleshoot your VAC Therapy device at home: step-by-step guides for our Hospital in the Home patients and family members.

Steps to change the canister

  1. Turn off the machine.
  2. Remove the canister from the machine by pushing down firmly on the clip at the side of the canister, then pulling it off slowly.
  3. Push down on the two clamps at either side of the connection on the tubing.
  4. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  5. Open the new canister and remove the cap by twisting it off.
  6. Remove the old canister by twisting and separating the connection to the VAC dressing between the clamps.
  7. Twist the new cannister into the VAC dressing tubing.
  8. Unclamp both clamps either side of the connection point.
  9. Turn on the machine, wait for screen to load, then follow the onscreen prompts to restart your therapy.

Steps to take if there is an air leak in your dressing

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Try to find the air leak in the dressing by placing your ear close to the dressing and listening for air escaping. Alternatively, move your hands slowly and gently along the dressing until the machine alarm stops and the vacuum resumes.
  3. Once the leak is identified, use the scissors and drape given to you by your Vitalis nurse. Cut a strip, remove number 1, and carefully place it half over the dressing and half over the new skin outside the dressing. Once stuck down, remove number 2 then gently pull off the blue tab at the end of the piece.

Steps to take if the VAC dressing has come off

  1. Turn off the machine.
  2. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  3. Place a clean dressing pad over the wound and secure with tape.
  4. Call the Vitalis Hospital in the Home manager to schedule a visit.

Steps to take if the track pad has come off

  1. Turn the machine off.
  2. Push down to close both clamps on the tubing.
  3. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  4. Open a new dressing and remove the track pad from the pack.
  5. Pull off tab number 1 and stick the track pad over the open hole in your dressing. Remove the top film starting with the blue tab.
  6. Remove the old track-pad tubing by twisting the connection between the clamps, then replace with the new track-pad tubing.
  7. Unclamp the tubing, turn the machine back on, then follow the onscreen prompts to restart your therapy.

IMPORTANT: If the track pad is off for more than two hours, a Vitalis Hospital in the Home nurse will need to visit you to change the dressing. Please call us on 0451 439 322 to arrange this. If the track pad is off for less than two hours, follow the steps below to charge it.

Steps to take if the battery is running low

  1. Check the charger is properly connected at all points, including on the device, at the charger box and at the powerpoint on the wall.
  2. If the machine starts to charge, allow at least two hours to fully charge the machine. (TIP: If you are active during the day, best practice is to charge your machine overnight to minimise battery loss during the day.)
  3. If all connections appear to be in working order and are thoroughly secure but the VAC machine still isn’t charging, call KCI Customer Care on 1300 524 822 to explain the issue and request a replacement machine.
